What are Piles?
Piles, also commonly known as haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels and tissues in or around the anus and the rectum. Many people suffer from piles, but the symptoms are not always visible which is why they do not realise that they have it.
Category of Piles
Internal Piles
Since they lie far inside the rectum, you cannot feel or see them. They are usually painless and become apparent when they are substantially enlarged. The only sign of internal piles is bleeding when you have a bowel movement.
External Piles
They are lower than the internal piles and are located underneath the skin that surrounds the anus. You can feel them when they swell, and they can cause itching, pain or bleeding with a bowel movement.
Causes
An extreme abdominal pressure can cause the veins to swell. This is caused by lifting heavy weights, obesity, vomiting, sitting or standing in the same position for a long time. Some women develop piles when they are pregnant as their body undergoes several hormonal changes during that time. It also occurs due to chronic constipation and chronic diarrhoea. It can also be caused by eating a low-fibre diet.
Symptoms
1. Bleeding after passing a stool
2. Itch in your anus
3. Tenderness or discomfort during bowel movement
4. A mucous discharge after passing a stool
5. Swelling near the anus
You should consult a doctor if your symptoms worsen, or you have rectal bleeding for more than a day or a week. Though it is rare, excessive haemorrhoidal bleeding can lead to anaemia.
Diet for Piles
A healthy diet is helpful in preventing haemorrhoids, and also if you suffer from them already. Regular exercise is also necessary if you have a sedentary job. It helps you keep your weight in check and enhances muscle tone.
1. Fibre-rich Diet
Filling up on fibre is something that everyone recommends. Some excellent sources of fibre are
• Legumes- Peas, lentils, black beans, soybeans, and peanuts
• Whole grains- Barley, brown rice and brown bread, and oatmeal
• Vegetables- Leafy greens like artichoke, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts
• Fruits- Raspberries, pears, tomatoes, and bananas
Avoid eating spicy or chilly food.
2. Drinking Fluids
It is necessary to stay adequately hydrated as it helps in healthy bowel movements. It prevents constipation and therefore decreases straining.
3. Exercise
Engaging in activities which increase abdominal pressure such as weightlifting can cause haemorrhoids. Staying active reduces pressure on the veins in your lower abdomen.
At-home Remedies
1. Rub petroleum jelly just inside the anus to reduce pain during bowel movements.
2. Take paracetamol for pain relief.
3. Do not sit for hours at a time. Take a break, at least once every hour.
4. While bathing, keep the anal area clean.
5. Do not scratch haemorrhoids as it can irritate the skin around your anus.
